ISSUES2010 No.4
Editor’s Note: Referring to the whole process from having a desire, choosing a tool, and completing the behavior of mobility, urban mobility, as a new complex concept to demonstrate the ability of a city to meet the demands of itself and all its citizens for mobility, is deeply influenced by its subject of the city and its citizens, its object of the mobility mode characterized by tools and infrastructures, and its carrier of the city’s built environment. The three components interact and inter-influence with each other during the whole process and determine the level of the city’s urban mobility. Therefore, the improvement of urban mobility necessarily calls for the efforts of the whole urban society from the three aspects mentioned above, and innovative urban mobility is of great significance, in particular for Chinese cities which are still on their way of rapid auto-mobilization while facing the huge challenge of the un-sustainability of traditional urban mobility characterized by the heavy use of fossil energy driving automobiles. From that viewpoint, although the pilot innovations of urban mobility introduced in this issue are not large-scale projects, they may have meaningful inspirations to Chinese cities to rethink about the future of urban mobility and their responsibility for urban mobility.
