International Forum of Qufu: Confucianism and Spatial Development Held in Qufu of Shandong Province
From May 31 to Jun. 1, 2008, the International Forum of Qufu: Confucianism and Spatial Development was held in Qufu of Shandong province, the hometown of Confucius. Initiated by Qufu Municipal Government and Qufu International Friendship Association, the forum was organized by Jining Municipal Government and the Institute of Confucius, in collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture of France, the French Embassy in China, the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, and the Department of Philosophy of Peking University. Mr. Ladsous, present French Ambassador to China, Mr. Marc Menguy, previous French Ambassador to China and founder of Qufu International Friendship Association, and the leaders of Qufu Municipal Government attended the forum and delivered speeches. Mr. WU Liangyong, Member of both Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of School of Architecture of Tsinghua University gave the keynote speech of Confucianism and Urban Development of Qufu and Its Region. Based on different cultural and professional background, decades of scholars from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wuhan University, Qufu Normal University, French National Center for Scientific Research, Far East Research Center at University of Sorbonne, Institute of Architecture of Paris Belleville, and University of Nantes, carried out heated discussions on the development of Confucianism and its influences on urban spatial development from the perspectives of city, architecture, music, education, and law, aiming to exploring the role of Confucianism in promoting the modern city development.
