2008 WSE Congress Held in Nanjing with Success
On Nov. 5 and 6, 2008, the 2008 Congress of World Society for Ekistics (WSE) was held in Southeast University in Nanjing.As the partner conference of the Fourth World City Forum that was held in Nanjing at the same time, this congress was organized by the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University in collaboration with the School of Architecture of Southeast University and the Construction Department of Jiangsu Province, with the theme of “Harmonious Ekistics”. More than 40 representatives and guests from 12 countries including Greece, Turkey, Ethiopia, Colombia, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and China attended the congress, which is regarded as a positive contribution to the construction of the urban and rural human settlements and the academic development of human settlements in China.
The world human settlement movement started after World War II, and the construction and research of human settlements that are promoted by the United Nations nowadays originated from the Ekistics theory put forward by the Greek scholar, C. A. Doxiadis, in the 1950s, who founded the WSE in Athens in 1965. As one of the founders of the scientific research on human settlements in China, Professor WU Liangyong of Tsinghua University was once the President of WSE from 1993 to 1995.
Mr. ZHU Wenyi, Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Mr. WANG Jianguo, Dean of the School of Architecture of Southeast University, and Ms. ZHOU Lan, Head of the Construction Department of Jiangsu Province attended the congress and delivered a speech respectively. Two keynote reports were delivered on the congress, World Harmonious Ekistics delivered by Mr. Rusen Keles, current President of WSE and Professor of Ankara University of Turkey, and Transformation of Development Mode and Exploration on Sciences of Human Settlements of Mr. WU Liangyong, former President of WSE and Professor of Tsinghua University (the report was delivered by Ms. LIU Jian, Associate Professor of Tsinghua University due to Prof. WU’s absence for health reason). After the lecture on Challenge of Accomplishing Harmonious Urbanization: Ekistics and Beyond by Professor Willianm Michelson from Toronto University of Canada on the traditional Doxiadis Lectures section, eleven scholars from New Zealand, Turkey, Ethiopia, Colombia, Canada, Japan, and China presented their academic study on the theory and practice of human settlements, all of which stimulated heated discussion among the attendants of the congress.
On the afternoon of Nov. 6, the council meeting and the assembly meeting of WSE were held, on which the application of new applicants were discussed, and the agreement was made to have the next congress of WSE in Turkey in the autumn of 2009.
