Fourth Group of Classified Historic Towns and Villages Announced
Lately, the Ministry of Housing and Urban & Rural Construction and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage jointly announced the fourth group of Classified Historic Towns and Villages. Mr. QIU Baoxing, Vice Minster of Housing and Urban & Rural Construction, and Mr. TONG Mingkang, Vice Director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech respectively. Since the announcement of the first group of Classified Historic Towns and Villages in 2003, there have been 143 towns and 108 villages entitled as either Classified Historic Town or Village (see Appendix), all of which are of high value of research and utilization, because they reflect the historical processes of formation and evolution of human settlements in different areas, of different ethnics, and at different socio-economic development phases, and record the traditional building styles, the outstanding architectural arts, the conventional folk customs, and the original spatial morphology.

It is known that the Ministry of Housing and Urban & Rural Construction and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage will continue the declaration of Classified Historic Towns and Villages in China. Efforts will be made to boost the healthy and sustainable development of Classified Historic Towns and Villages through improving the legislation system of protection, regulating the formulation and record administration of protection plans, setting up the information system of dynamic supervision, strengthening the administration of supervision, and completing the technical support and service system.
