Members from Urban Planning Society of China Attended 46th ISOCARP World Congress
The 46th World Congress of the Inter-national Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) was held in Nairobi, Kenya from Sept. 19 to 23, 2010, with the theme of “Sustainable City/Developing World”. About a thousand planners, government officials, and professors from more than 80 countries attended this conference. Besides the keynote speeches, four workshops were also held. These were themed: Effective Policy-making for Sustainable Urbanization; the Impact of Spatial Planning, Urban Design and Built Form on Urban Sustainability; Urban Planning Instruments for Sustain-ability; and Improving Governance for Sustainable Development. During the congress, 80 specialists delivered their latest research achievements, and mayors and policy-makers summits, training seminars and exhibitions were held.
Along with the rapid urbanization process, the city planning of China becomes more and more important in the international planning field. Nine papers from China were selected to be read in the themed meetings of this congress, two papers were selected to be published in the ISOCARP Review, projects like “Urban Strategic Plan of Guangzhou: Exploration and Practice” declared by the Guangzhou Planning Bureau achieved the ISOCARP Awards for Excellence 2010, and Mr. SHI Nan, Secretary General of the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC), was selected as a member of the Scientific Committee of ISOCARP. During this congress, UPSC was invited by ISOCARP to hold a special session on China city planning and introduced six projects, which were: Spatial Development Strategy Study of Tianjin Binhai Area; Urban Strategic Plan of Guangzhou: Exploration and Practice; Low-carbon Kunshan: Towards the Sustainable Development; Shanghai Changxingdao Island Master Plan; Comprehensive Plan of Ecological Belt of Yongding River; and Implementation Plan of South Beijing Area. These projects attracted great interests from the oversea planners and specialists.
