Ecological Environment of Loess Plateau to be Improved in 20 Years
Approved by the State Council, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments jointly published the Planning Outline for Comprehensive Treatment of Loess Plateau Regions, aiming to fundamentally improve the ecological environment of the Loess Plateau region before 2030.
Affected by natural factors such as broken terrain, loose soil, and concentrated rainfall, etc., as well as human factors such as severe deforestation, overgrazing, hillside reclamation, etc., the water loss and soil erosion of the Loess Plateau region is rather serious, and a vast area of land suffers from desertification. In view of the above situation, the Planning Outline, which has the conservation of water and soil, reclamation of land, protection of forest and vegetation, and development of plant-eating animal breeding as its main measures, aims to fundamentally ameliorate the ecological environment of the Loess Plateau region through long-term comprehensive treatment. The main work includes constructing silt-retention dams, changing slopes to fields, reforestation, closing mountains to facilitate forestation, improving grasslands, etc., covering 341 districts (counties) of 7 provinces (regions), including Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, etc.
It is predicted that in the Loess Plateau region, by 2030, the area treated for water loss and soil erosion will be increased by 128,400 km2, the sediment that flows into the Yellow River will be reduced by 650 million tons/year, the area processed for forest and vegetation formation and protection will reach 216,300 km2, and the relevant regional ecological environment will also be improved.
