Famous Urban Planning Educator, Prof. WU Liangyong, Wins “National Top Science & Technology Award”
At 10 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2012, President HU Jintao presented the “National Top Science & Technology Award” and expressed his congratulations to Prof. WU Liangyong on 2011 National Science & Technology Award Conference that was held by the Central Government and State Council of P. R. China. As an award on science with remarkable influence and recognitions in China, the “National Top Science & Technology Award” is awarded to only two Chinese scientists who have accomplished outstanding achievements in a certain scientific field. The winning of Prof. WU Liangyong will not only promote further development of the discipline of architecture and urban planning, but also attract the public to understand the significance of the industry of architecture and urban planning.

Prof. WU Liangyong is a distinguished urban and rural planer with both domestic and international reputation. He is a member of both Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as the honorary president of Urban Planning Society of China. Dedicating himself into the methodology research on urban planning and design of human settlements, Prof. WU published 28 works, such as Introduction to Science of Human Settlements and A General Theory of Architecture, and over 200 academic papers.

Prof. WU Liangyong participated in the establishment of Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC, named as Urban-Rural Planning Academic Commission of Architectural Society of China at that time) and worked as the Deputy Director and Director from the first to the fourth session; since 1990, he was the President of UPSC, and the Honorary President started from 2004; then in 2006, he was awarded the life achievement award by UPSC.

Prof. WU Liangyong has been highly concerning about China Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and has been attending various academic activities organized by CAST. In September 2011 when he was 89 years’ old, Prof. WU attended the 13th CAST Annual Conference and communicated with leaders from Tianjin Municipality.
