Four Ministries Jointly Promote Traditional Village Protection
In order to carry out the related working instructions of the State Council and promote the works of traditional village protection, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD), the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, and the Ministry of Finance jointly conducted a teleconference on traditional village investigation on May 10.
Vice Minister QIU Baoxing of MOHURD pointed out that traditional villages had five functions: the carrier of traditional culture, traditional architecture, and traditional layout; the effective carrier of maintaining the recycling economic feature of traditional agriculture; the basis for developing agriculture and famers’ courtyard economy; a kind of social capital of the state; and the root for ethnic culture of Chinese including the people overseas and from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Currently, there is no thorough and scientific investigation on traditional villages, resulting in the unclear number of traditional villages and non-systematized protection work. A great number of traditional villages are declining and fading amid rapid urbanization.
This conference clarified respective responsibilities, roles, and requirements of four ministries in the investigation. After the investigation, each ministry will formulate a report on that and submit it to the State Council, which will issue the opinions concerning the enhancement of traditional village protection and jointly nominate a number of key protected traditional villages at the state level, so as to promote the protection work in collaboration.
