Teaching Seminar on Urban-Rural Housing and Community Development Issues Successfully Held
On Dec. 7, 2013, the “2013 Teaching Seminar on Urban-Rural Housing and Community Development Issues under the New Situation & Work Conference of the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee of the Urban Planning Society of China” was held in Langfang City. The seminar was jointly planned and organized by the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee of the Urban Planning Society of China and Tsinghua University’s School of Architecture, and co-organized by the journal of Community Design and the Langfang Municipal Urban-Rural Planning Bureau. Under the new situation, the practice and study of urban-rural housing and community development continued to expand in terms of both connotation and extension, which had shown such trends as diversified topics, varied methods, and disciplinary integration. Targeted at this situation, the seminar explored how the higher education institutions of architecture, as the base for training China’s urban planning and architectural design talents, should understand the current features of disciplinary and academic development and changes in the field of urban-rural housing, how to better improve the housing theory and teaching system with Chinese characteristics, and other related issues.
The seminar invited about 40 participants, including the course directors and teachers from the nine higher education institutions such as Southeast University, Tianjin University, Chongqing University, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing University of Technology, the North China University of Technology, and Tsinghua University, as well as members of the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee. Jingxia WANG, Vice Chairman of the Urban Planning Society of China and Director of the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee; Shaojie YANG, Deputy Director of the Langfang Municipal Urban-Rural Planning Bureau; Yingshi TU, Deputy Director, and Wenkai ZHAO, Deputy Secretary General of the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee. Lanchun BIAN, Party Secretary, and Jian LIU, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, attended the seminar on behalf of the organizer and the co-organizer.
The teachers systematically introduced the curriculum system, teaching contents, teaching features, teaching effects, students’ work, etc. of their respective universities, and discussed about the issues like current problems and challenges existing in their teaching fields and how to strengthen the communication and cooperation between the universities. And the members of the Residential Area Planning Academic Committee exchanged opinions with university teachers on the aspects of the demand of planning institutes for talents, the impacts of the market on teaching, the teaching focus in the field of housing, etc. The participants reached a consensus, to publish the results of this seminar in 2014 and to further enhance the connection between the universities so as to promote teaching cooperation and resource sharing, and also jointly planned the 2014 Work Conference of Residential Area Planning Academic Committee from the perspective of disciplinary development.
