Hong Kong: Releases the Report on Population Distribution Projections 2015 – 2024
In December 2015, the Planning Department of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region released the report on Population Distribution Projections 2015 – 2024 to provide a reference for the government on area planning and on the provision of various facilities and services. With the population in mid-2014 as the base number, the report estimates the distribution of the population in various areas in Hong Kong between 2015 – 2024. According to the report, the population in the New Territories and Kowloon will reach 4.24 million and 2.33 million in 2024, increasing by 0.46 million and 0.13 million respectively. At the same time, the population in Hong Kong Island will gradually decrease from 1.27 million to 1.19 million. Moreover, based on the zoning by district councils, Sha Tin District, Kwun Tong District, and Yuen Long District will become the three districts with the largest population, with their population increasing to 720 thousand, 690 thousand, and 690 thousand respectively. In addition, the East District will become the district with the highest percentage of elderly aged 65 years old or above, with the percentage rising to 28%.
