Chinese Urban Planning Organizations’ Voice in the WUF9
The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF9) was held during Feb. 7 – 13, 2018, in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) sent out its high-level experts delegation to attend the conference, including Shi Nan, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of UPSC and Deputy Editor in Chief of China City Planning Review (CCPR); Wu Zhiqiang, Vice President of UPSC and Vice President of Tongji University; Mao Qizhi, Professor of Tsinghua University and Deputy Editor in Chief of CCPR; and He Yong, Member of Ecological Planning Academic Committee of UPSC and Deputy Chief of Planning Research Office, Beijing Municipal Urban Planning and Design Institute. In the series of parallel meetings and activities of the conference, the delegation of UPSC voiced their opinions on behalf of China’s urban planning field.

On Feb. 9, UPSC and International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), American Planning Association (APA) jointly held the parallel meeting on the theme of “Planner for Climate Action.” Shi Nan, the Secretary-General of UPSC attended the meeting as a guest. Prof. Wu Zhiqiang and Prof. Mao Qizhi attended the special forum of “Eco-City and Green Development” for the 2nd World City Day. And He Yong attended the meeting on “Carrying out Climate Changing Action in Urban Area” that was held by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of German and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China. On Feb. 10, UPSC and INU held a training activity under the theme of “Saving the Planet by Design: Making Urbanization Sustainable by Creating Human Urban Space.” Prof. Mao Qizhi introduced the achievements that China accomplished during urbanization and the challenges China is facing. He also explained how Chinese planners create livable community and street space through planning design with examples of the 15-minute community life circle planning in Shanghai and the Street Desgin Norms of Shanghai. Shi Nan attended the high-end roundtable meeting under the theme of “An Integrated Territorial Approach to Sustainable Development” that was held by UN Habitat, and introduced the achievement on coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region that China accomplished in his speech.
