Central Government of China Invests about 1,000 Billion Financial Fund in Western Development during Past Five Years
The investment of China's central government to the western area has brought along the investment of the society. The economic development in the western area speeds up gradually every year. From 2000 to 2003, the growth rates of GDP are 8.5%, 8.8%, 10.0% and 11.3% respectively. It is predicted that the growth rate of GDP in 2004 will surpass that of 2003. The relative difference of the annual average growth rate between the western area and the country reduced from 1.5% to 0.8%.
During the past five years, the construction of major infrastructures in the western area, such as transportation, water conservancy, energy, and communication, has obtained a substantial development. The construction of 60 key projects has been newly launched, with the total investment of about 850 billion RMB. The road traffic mileage of 910,000 kilometers has been increased while the railway track of 4066.5 kilometers has been constructed. And the commercial gas supply has been realized owing to the project of transmitting natural gas from the west to the east.
In the past five years, the central govern merit has increased the investment for the ecological construction of the western area. By the end of 2004, with thanks to the project of reusing farmland for forestation, 0.118 billion mu of cultivated land on steep slopes have been used for forestation, and 0.117 billion mu of wasted hills and land have been afforested. Since 2003, the project of reusing pastureland for grassland has been implemented, and it is estimated that 0.19 billion mu of badly deteriorated grasslands have been treated.
